Sotheby’s – English Literature, History, Childrens Books & Illustrations
June 28th, 2011 by adminThe sale contains two outstanding highlights. Firstly, the earliest rules and historic archive of the world’s first football (soccer) club, Sheffield FC, including the first version of their laws of the game, detailed minute books, and the only known surviving copy of the first printing of the club’s rules of football. Secondly, the autograph manuscript of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel “The Watsons” – the only such manuscript remaining in private hands — extensively revised and corrected throughout. Other major highlights include James Joyce’s wartime family passport, recording his movements during his most creative period when he was composing his masterpiece Ulysses, two major series of letters by Benjamin Disraeli, a number of valuable books sold in aid of the Catholic charity CAFOD, rare first editions by the Brontë sisters, a first-hand account of the Battle of Trafalgar, watercolours by Beatrix Potter and a pen and ink drawing by E.H. Shepard of Winnie-the-Pooh and Tigger
Sotheby’s – A Classic Bordeaux Collection featuring Three Glorious Decades
June 25th, 2011 by adminWe are delighted to be able to offer this magnificent, pristine collection of Bordeaux, the property of a knowledgeable continental wine lover and part of an important cellar which benefits from perfect conditions. The stars from both the Right and Left Banks are all present. The wines were acquired when first offered and are thus drinking in superb fashion. Vintages span all the great years between 1986 and 2007, with all the stops along the way. And the wide range of formats is very exciting, providing bottle sizes for every occasion and special event. It is also fascinating to make comparisons of the same wine in different formats – sometimes one can see especially vibrant, youthful characteristics in a very large bottle, while there are other moments where the nuances are barely perceptible. Have a great dinner party for wine-loving friends and try it out for yourselves!
