Phillips de Pury & Company

April 15th, 2011 by

While normally used as a financial term referring to the rapidly expanding economies of Brazil, Russia, India & China, the acronym BRIC here refers to the burgeoning contemporary art practices within these four countries.

Following the thrilling results for the first ever BRIC auctions in 2010, which highlighted the international demand for the best and most exciting art from the fast growing economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China, Phillips de Pury & Company will continue to break new ground with BRIC 2011.  Numerous world auction records were achieved last year for KOMAR & MELAMID, EMILIANO DI CAVALCANTI, VLADIMIR YANKILEVSKY & OSGÊMEOS; with outstanding results for ERIK BULATOV, AI WEIWEI, LIU WEI, CAI GUO QIANG & ZHANG XIAOGANG. This is testament to the rich variety, quality and diversity of the art, design and photography offered during these sales.

This year’s BRIC sale will focus on artists with longevity and appeal as well as emerging new talent. The sale will offer collectors the opportunity to learn about and buy into these diverse markets in one sale room with a compelling, edited selection of the best available works.

“With this auction we aim to show the new strength and depth of the Contemporary Art Market in Brazil, and the continuing upward trends of the Chinese, Indian and Russian markets.” Henry Allsopp Worldwide Director, Curated Sales and Exhibitions.

Sotheby’s – Important Watches

April 15th, 2011 by

Sotheby’s Evening sale of Important Watches at the Hotel Beau-Rivage in Geneva on Sunday, May 15th will take collectors on a journey through five centuries of watch history, from 1580 to the present day.  The sale, which features 280 lots, will bring together an impressive range of antique timepieces, pocket watches and wristwatches including a 16th-century German tambour watch, highly rare Rolex sports watches – models like Submariner, Sea Dweller, Explorer – and various versions of the Daytona.

Patek Philippe will also be present with very rare complicated watches such as the Ref. 2499 second series with magnifying glass.  Part of the sale will be devoted to pocket watches with three sections showing enamel timepieces made for Indian, Turkish and Chinese markets.

Finally, this sale will include watches that have witnessed man’s limits and accomplishments such as the collection of Rolex from Dr. Janusz Kurbiel, the Prince Troubetskoy racing driver timepieces, and the Ulysse Nardin split seconds chronograph that made history with official time keeping of Fausto Coppi’s legendary Cycling World Hour Record.

Sotheby’s – 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture and Decorative Works of Art Sales

April 13th, 2011 by

This spring, Sotheby’s is to offer a private collection of 19th Century Furniture and Decorative Art comprised of approximately 50 lots. It includes a wide array of stylistic influences, from the sober French ancient régime to the more creative, revival interpretations fashionable during the Napoléon III and Belle Époque eras. The clock and barometer pair were cast and designed by the Ancienne Masion Colin, formerly owned and established by Émile Colin in 1882. This magnificent pair is testament to the grand scale and quality of objects used for furnishing interiors in the late 19th century, as it juxtaposes two powerful mythological deities drawn from the Louis XIV decorative art vocabulary: Chronos and Aurora, and the more modern putti at play.

This April, the 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Ceramic, Silver and Works of Art sale will feature the property of the Irene von Cseh Trust (lots 279-300) and a small collection of Caldwell articles (see lot 399 for a rare Renaissance-style chandelier), among the much sought-after French cabinet makers like Beurdeuley, Gouverneur, Linke and Zwiener, to name a few.

Sotheby’s – Impressionist & Modern Art

April 13th, 2011 by

Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art sale on the evening of May 3 will be the main event of the Spring season for those collectors seeking exceptional works by the best-known artists of the 20th century.

The star lot of the evening will be Pablo Picasso’s sumptuous Femmes lisant (Deux personnages), one of the coveted “Marie-Thérèse” pictures from the 1930s. This important painting leads the strong selection of works by Picasso that span the artist’s career, from the dramatic Blue period in 1901, through his rigorous neo-Classical period and the fantastical Surrealist era, to the heroic works of his final years. Among these prized pictures are the compelling Surrealist icon Femme, a dynamic mid-century portrait of Paloma and a monumental depiction of lovers that dates from the artist’s late career, all from the collection great San Francisco patron of the arts, Dodie Rosekrans.
